The large gaps between weapon tiers usually means that at a given time you'll have 2 or 3 party members who can deal tons of damage and 1 shot enemies and the rest of your party is basically a rounding error in terms of DPS. You mostly just move a unit behind cover and plink away at your enemies round by round until you win. There's little need for this granularity, because the entire time I played I encountered maybe 5 or 6 persuade checks, most of which did almost nothing and the rest of which I couldn't pass despite having invested several points in each skill.Ĭombat is frustratingly based on hit chance and there's little strategy involved. Non-combat skill checks are probability based so you'll be doing a lot of save scumming, and they are mostly just different flavors of "open a door or container to get extra loot." There is zero incentive to double up and have multiple characters with the same skill. Unless you are very bad at the game, you will almost never see your sniper engaged in melee and if he is you can usually make him step back and then shoot!)Ĭompare this to perks the fallout series, like New Vegas from which Wasteland draws much of its inspiration, where each skill has a chance to shine in different contexts, and perks meaningfully change the way you play (An egregious example are the Sniper perks, which offer incrementally smaller penalties to shooting in melee combat. Most of them just give tiny bonuses to certain situations. Periodically, you will unlock perks but most of them are useless and do little to differentiate one character from another. The rpg mechanics leave little room for meaningful progression, as you basically just pick a weapon for your character to be good at and pour more and more points into it, giving better hit chances. Not to be too negative but I was not a fan of Wasteland 2 compared to many of the other CRPGs I have played.
